Leather Luggage Care & Maintenance

Purchasing genuine leather luggage is a great investment! Why: Because it is durable, versatile and stylish.

However, after many years of use, even leather luggage can tear or fall apart. These damages are usually reparable, and you don't always need to purchase new leather luggage when this happens.

With a few simple steps, you can repair major luggage problems in no time.

Some Things You Will Need:

v  Spare straps and handles

v  Spare wheels

v  Luggage repair kit

v  Leather repair kit

v  Pliers

  1. Use compatible leather cleaner to clean the entire surface of the bag. Divide the bag into sections.   Use a small amount of cleaner, wiping each section clean with a rag before moving to the next. Be sure to remove any of the cleaner promptly because leaving any liquid on leather too long could damage the surface. Your leather repair kit should have a bottle of leather cleaner. You can purchase leather cleaner at many shoe stores or fine leather stores.  If not, soapy water works as well.
  2. After cleaning apply a leather conditioner.  Again, apply in small amounts in sections. Leather conditioner will bring the lustre and shine back to your luggage, also serving as a sealer to protect it from more wear and tear.
  3. Be sure to purchase a leather repair kit. Apply a scuff remover and wipe clean with a rag. This should repair any scuffs on the bag. For a tear, apply a leather sealer (be sure to match the color to your bag.) by working the solution over the damaged area outwardly. Polish and rub until the solution is barely visible. Be careful not to over-scrub.
  4. Always fix any broken zippers.. To replace the slider, which is usually what the issue is, take the old one off, using something to spread it apart, as needed. Put the new one on, by lining up the two sides of the zipper up and slide them into the sides of the slider.  For help with sliding them through, use pliers to force the slider onto the zipper. Once the new slider is back on, zip the slider back and forth to make sure it works.
  5. Be sure to keep a spare wheel and strap in your luggage in the event of a mishap, including accessories like axles and clasps. Order extras from the manufacturing company if you can. These parts are usually the first to go. With your luggage repair kit, reattach missing wheels and straps and repair the major damages.

With proper care and maintenance you will enjoy a long life with your favourite piece of luggage.
